These scams increasingly show up through convincing emails, text messages, social media posts, phone calls, fake websites, QR codes, and even door-to-door solicitations. No one sets out to be scammed, but fraudsters are skilled at manipulating emotions and creating urgency.
You don’t have to stop giving to protect yourself. You just need to give smart.
Here are steps you can take to ensure your donations go where you intend:
Ask questions before you donate.
Legitimate charities welcome transparency. If someone pressures you to give immediately, that is a red flag.
Verify registration in California.
All charities operating in California—and the telemarketers who solicit on their behalf—must be registered with the California Attorney General’s Registry of Charitable Trusts. If they are not registered, do not donate.
Confirm IRS tax-exempt status.
If you are donating to a national charity based outside California, ask whether it is a registered 501(c)(3) organization with the IRS and request its Employer Identification Number (EIN). You can verify this information using the IRS Tax-Exempt Organization Search tool.
Donate to charities you know and trust.
Be cautious of organizations with names that closely resemble well-known charities. Scammers often rely on look-alike names and websites to confuse donors.
Do your research.
Take time to look up the organization online, understand how donations are used, and confirm legitimacy through trusted resources such as Charity Navigator or the Better Business Bureau’s Give.org. Be especially cautious of links sent by text or social media and go directly to the charity’s official website instead.
Don’t be pressured.
Urgency, emotional manipulation, or threats are common scam tactics. Legitimate charities will allow you time to verify information and make an informed decision.
Be cautious with door-to-door solicitations.
If someone appears at your door asking for donations, do not feel obligated to give on the spot. Ask for written information and verify it independently before donating.
Protect your personal and financial information.
Never share your Social Security number or other sensitive personal information. Avoid donating by cash, which is untraceable, or check, which can expose your bank account information. Credit card donations are generally the safest option, as they provide documentation and the ability to dispute fraudulent charges if necessary.
Giving is a powerful way to strengthen our community, but only when your generosity reaches legitimate causes. By staying informed and taking a few extra steps, you can protect yourself while continuing to make a real difference.
If you believe you’ve encountered a charity scam, report it to local law enforcement or the California Attorney General’s Office.
Together, we can keep compassion strong and scammers out of our community.
If you suspect you were scammed out of a donation:
• Report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission.
• File a consumer complaint with the California Attorney General. I hope these tips help you avoid the grinches this holiday season. On behalf of our entire team at the District Attorney’s Office, which is dedicated to building safe and healthy communities, we wish you a joyful and safe holiday season.

ENERGY BILL ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS: HELP IS AVAILABLE

https://www.oceansidechamber.com/oceanside-blog/energy-bill-assistance-programs-help-is-available

https://www.oceansidechamber.com/oceanside-blog/energy-bill-assistance-programs-help-is-available#comments

Uncategorized

Managing energy bills can be challenging. From simple adjustments to smart upgrades, these ten tips can help your business stay efficient and productive all season long.
1.Rearrange for natural light and warmth. Shift desks and workstations to take advantage of sunlight and airflow. This reduces the need for artificial lighting and heating – especially during shorter fall days.
2.Switch to energy-efficient devices. Laptops use far less energy than desktops. If your team can work on laptops, you’ll see a noticeable drop in electricity use.
3.Use built-in power-saving features. Enable sleep and hibernate modes on all computers, monitors and printers. These settings help cut energy use during idle times.
4.Seal out drafts. Install door sweeps and weather stripping on exterior doors and windows to keep warm air in and cold air out.
5.Go cloud-based. Hosting servers on-site consumes a lot of energy. Switching to cloud services can reduce your energy footprint and improve scalability.
6.Upgrade your lighting. Swap out older bulbs for LEDs. They use up to 75% less energy and last much longer. Bonus: they work great with motion sensors and timers.
7.Schedule smart. Run energy-intensive tasks, like printing or using large equipment, during off-peak hours to take advantage of lower utility rates.
8.Encourage green commuting. Support biking, carpooling or public transit – better yet, working from home.
9.Unplug overnight. Coffee makers, microwaves and mini-fridges in break rooms can quietly drain energy. Unplug them when the office is closed.
10.Add seasonal insulation. Cozy rugs on tile or hardwood floors help retain heat and add a warm, inviting touch to your space.
By thinking creatively and implementing these practical strategies, your business can stay comfortable, save money and support a more sustainable future. You’ll use less energy reheating food than cooking from scratch daily.
3. Maintain your heating system. Make sure your heating system is running efficiently by scheduling a maintenance check. Replace filters regularly to ensure your system is working at its best. Schedule your free gas appliances check at sdge.com/GasCheck.
4. Clean light fixtures and bulbs. Dust can reduce brightness. Clean bulbs shine more efficiently, reducing the need for extra lighting.
5. Use ceiling fans wisely. Set your ceiling fans to rotate clockwise at a low speed. This will push warm air down from the ceiling, helping to keep your rooms warmer.
6. Close the fireplace damper. When your fireplace is not in use, make sure the damper is closed. An open damper allows warm air to escape up the chimney.
7. Use rugs on bare floors. Rugs add insulation and help rooms retain heat, especially in homes with tile or hardwood flooring.
8. Take shorter showers. Heating water with natural gas can be a big energy expense. Try to take shorter showers and consider installing a low-flow showerhead to reduce water usage.
9. Close off unused rooms. Shut doors and vents in rooms you don’t use often to direct the heat where it’s most needed.
10. Use natural light. Open curtains during sunny days to warm rooms naturally and close them at night to retain heat. Also, thermal curtains help trap heat and reduce drafts.
By following these tips, you can enjoy a warm and cozy home this fall while keeping your energy bills lower. This is not an extra charge, rather it is a change in how your bill is structured.

Why is this happening?
California Assembly Bill 205 requires electric utilities across the state to change how residential customers are billed to help make bills more transparent, while making it more affordable to use electric technologies, such as cars and appliances.

What’s changing?
We’re updating how some existing costs appear on your bill. Starting soon, you’ll see a new line item called the Base Services Charge. Most customers will pay approximately $24 a month1. Customers enrolled in FERA and CARE will automatically receive a discounted Base Services Charge of approximately $12 and $6, respectively.
The Base Services Charge covers some of the fixed costs that were previously included in the electric delivery price like customer service, transformers and meters that help ensure safe, reliable electric delivery to your property. By moving some costs out of delivery pricing, you may pay about 10% less per kWh for the energy you use (roughly 5 cents per kWh on electric delivery)2. Each customer’s usage varies, so lower electricity prices may or may not lead to a lower total bill. Because this is a reallocation of costs, SDG&E will not earn more profit from this change.
To learn more, visit sdge.com/BaseServicesCharge or call 1-800-411-7343.

CUT ENERGY COSTS WHILE SUPPORTING THE GRID

https://www.oceansidechamber.com/oceanside-blog/cut-energy-costs-while-supporting-the-grid

https://www.oceansidechamber.com/oceanside-blog/cut-energy-costs-while-supporting-the-grid#comments

Uncategorized

Higher temperatures can mean higher energy bills and cause a big strain on the electrical grid. Recycling that oil keeps our environment healthy too!

Did you know? Used motor oil never wears out—it just gets dirty and can be cleaned, recycled, and used again. Recycling used motor oil conserves a natural resource and is also good for the environment. In fact, Oceanside residents prevented over 30,000 gallons of used oil from polluting our local waterways by recycling used oil in 2021 alone!

Motor oil poured onto the ground, into storm drains or tossed into trash cans—even in a sealed container—can contaminate and pollute the soil, groundwater, streams and rivers. It’s also illegal.

Storing used oil in containers for long periods of time is also dangerous because many materials can degrade when in contact with used oil, increasing the risk of a spill. Recycling your used motor oil reduces pollution and safety threats.

When you take your used oil to a certified center for recycling you are protecting the environment, and conserving a valuable resource. For more information including where to properly recycle your used oil and oil filters, please visit www.greenoceanside.org

The Marine debris reduction ordinance is in full effect

https://www.oceansidechamber.com/oceanside-blog/the-marine-debris-reduction-ordinance-is-in-full-effect

https://www.oceansidechamber.com/oceanside-blog/the-marine-debris-reduction-ordinance-is-in-full-effect#comments

Uncategorized

As of January 1, 2025, the Marine Debris Reduction ordinance is in full effect. Across the county, there were more than 11,300 auto thefts last year, representing about $140 million in losses, according to statistics from the San Diego Association of Governments. In fact, last year our office filed more than 850 cases against 900 defendants for auto theft-related charges.

Thankfully, our region has a Regional Auto Theft Taskforce (RATT), that works to reduce vehicle theft in San Diego County. They have taken down many criminal auto theft rings that have led to prosecutions and ultimately jail time for criminals.

Auto theft uniquely disrupts the victim’s life, especially in a vehicle-centered city like San Diego where almost every aspect of your daily living revolves around your vehicle. From being unable to get to work, school and doctor’s appointments to buying food, the theft of your vehicle can be devastating. But there are ways to be proactive, so you do not become a victim of auto theft. Here are some simple tips that can reduce your probability of becoming a victim of auto theft:

· Do not leave your vehicle doors unlocked. Criminals are opportunists and they will find their way into an unlocked vehicle sooner or later.
· Do not leave items of any value in plain sight in a parked vehicle.
· Do not leave your keys in your vehicle.
· Do not leave keys hanging on a hook in your garage.
· Do not leave your garage door open.
· Do not store a spare key in your garage or second vehicle.
· Do not leave your vehicle unattended while it is running.
· Do not assume your vehicle is safe to be left unlocked because you live in a gated area or have an enclosed parking garage.
· Do not leave car keys in a lockbox attached to your vehicle while at the beach or on a hike.
· To avoid becoming a victim of identity theft in addition to auto theft, do not leave valuable items in your vehicle.

The harm to victims is compounded when valuables, wallets, checkbooks, or phones are left in a vehicle, and it is stolen. If a thief gains access to the personal identifying information such as your driver’s license or credit card, they can illegally use your personal information to make purchases and steal your identity. Some thieves may try to re-sell your vehicle, and if you leave the vehicle title in the vehicle, the bad actor can attempt to transfer title or sell your vehicle to an unsuspecting innocent buyer.

Earlier this Summer, RATT completed a two-year investigation involving 50 defendants. The undercover operation recovered 172 stolen vehicles, drugs, and firearms. RATT’s mission cannot be fulfilled without the help of the public. If you have tips or information on vehicle thefts, please let RATT know on the anonymous tip line: 1-888-TELLRAT (888-835-5728).

As your District Attorney, I’m committed to increasing communication and accessibility between the DA’s Office and the public in order to keep you safe. But one type of scammer who does tremendous damage is not a faceless stranger who contacts you on the Internet, by text message, or phone call. This threat comes with a friendly, often familiar, face. It's your friendly, neighborhood life insurance agent.

While the majority of life insurance agents are ethical and upstanding, there are unscrupulous, unethical agents who pose a serious threat to consumers, particularly to seniors. Fraudulent life agents target seniors because many seniors have accumulated wealth over decades of working and saving -- money they plan to use for their retirement, or to pass on to their beloved heirs. Life agents looking to make a quick buck scam the public in a variety of ways, including but not limited to the following:

Misrepresentation of terms

Premium theft

Twisting/Churning

Forgery/identity theft

Ponzi schemes

The magnitude of the problem posed by bad actor life insurance agents is better understood when one realizes that life insurance policies include not only the commonly-understood policies with a death benefit, but also the countless annuity policies that are offered by insurance companies as a low-risk investment that provides an income stream to the policyholder.

The financial risk posed by unscrupulous life insurance agents does not disappear once the agent retires. Former life agents often have lengthy lists of clients they have accumulated over the years of working in the industry. Sometimes unscrupulous agents solicit previous insurance clients for risky private investments that are not offered by an established insurance company, nor regulated and not insured.

Anyone considering investing in life insurance products should remember the suggestions below to minimize the risk of being scammed by unethical life insurance agents.

Contact the California Department of Insurance to check an agent’s insurance license history for previous complaints or discipline,

Never give your premium to the agent. Mail it to the insurance company instead.

Get and retain copies of all relevant documents, applications, policies, etc.

Consider not buying a policy the day it was pitched to you by the agent. Take time to evaluate it.

Be suspicious of any “private” or “special” investment opportunity that’s not produced by an established insurance company.

Thankfully, there is a resource available to consumers in San Diego who have been victimized by life insurance agents or former agents. The Life and Annuity Consumer Protection Program provides funding for the investigation and prosecution of unethical life insurance agents. The San Diego District Attorney’s Office has prosecuted many cases under the program, and defendants have received lengthy prison sentences. In addition, we have seized and sold defendants’ properties and returned well over $1 million to victims as restitution.

As your District Attorney, I’m committed to increasing communication and accessibility between the DA’s Office and the public in order to keep you safe. I hope these consumer and public safety tips have been helpful.

How to Get a Better Night’s Sleep for Good Health

https://www.oceansidechamber.com/oceanside-blog/how-to-get-a-better-nights-sleep-for-good-health

https://www.oceansidechamber.com/oceanside-blog/how-to-get-a-better-nights-sleep-for-good-health#comments

Community

Four tips to improve your sleep habitsAre you tired of tossing and turning in bed, night after night, desperately seeking a good night’s sleep? This is especially true if you have chronic insomnia or another untreated sleep disorder that keeps you from getting the amount and quality of sleep that you need for good health.

“As difficult as insomnia can be by itself, ongoing sleep deprivation can lead to other significant health problems,” says Derek Loewy, PhD, a clinical psychologist and sleep medicine specialist at Scripps Clinic.

Sleep problems can raise the risk of chronic conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obesity and depression. In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness month, we are spreading the message far and wide that if you are in an abusive relationship, there is help. Last year, the figure was 10, but it’s still 10 too many. In San Diego County, we are fighting every day to save lives from the destructive cycles of domestic violence. We do this through education and awareness, victim services, law enforcement response and prosecution.

A point of pride in this area is One Safe Place: The North County Family Justice Center, which provides free support services under one roof to anyone who has experienced child abuse, sexual assault, domestic violence, hate crime, elder abuse, human trafficking, violent loss, family violence, or other abuse or victimization. Since opening over a year ago, we have served more than 3,200 people and have helped nearly 100 victims with tools to prevent them from being tracked electronically by an abuser. You can learn more about the fabulous facility at OneSafePlaceNorth.org. Prosecutors and investigators in this unit work closely with countywide law enforcement and community groups to stop the violence, to make victims safer, and to hold abusers accountable.

Remember, domestic violence tears families apart and is the single greatest cause of injury to women in the United States. If you or someone you know is being abused by a current or former partner, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233) for confidential support and assistance planning for safety. Practicing awareness can make a big difference in early detection.

Regular breast self-exams can help physicians catch cancer early, when treatment is more likely to be effective.

“If you’re doing a breast self-exam and find something that’s abnormal, be sure to bring it to the attention of your physician and make sure it’s looked at,” says Sonia Ali, MD, an oncologist at Scripps Cancer Center and Scripps Clinic. “Nothing trumps knowing your body and knowing what’s new and what’s changed.”

Most breast lumps are benign but should not be ignored. The only way to know for sure what is going on is by seeing your health care provider, who can take the necessary steps to diagnose or rule out breast cancer.

Symptoms of breast cancer
The most common warning sign of breast cancer is a lump or mass that develops in the breast tissue or breast area. In some cases, the mass may be too small to feel and is only discovered with a mammogram or ultrasound exam.

Other breast cancer symptoms include:

Skin redness

Dimpling or puckering on the breast

Scaliness on nipple

Nipple changes

Ulcer on the breast or nipple

Thickening of the skin, resulting in an orange-peel texture

Swelling of the breast

Diagnosis and treatment
Breast oncologists have diagnostic tests that can analyze individual tumors on a genetic level. The results can help guide treatment decisions.

Treatment depends on the type of breast cancer and whether it has spread to other parts of the body. Treatment may include:

Surgery

Chemotherapy

Radiation

Hormone therapy

Immunotherapy

A combination of these

Treatment experiences differ
While cancer treatments are a concern for many patients, the stories they hear do not always match the reality.
“A lot of women will say something like: ‘Dad had cancer. I know what chemotherapy is like,’” says Dr. Ali. “But there are many different types of chemotherapy regimens, and even people who get the same drugs often don’t have the same reactions. Don’t take someone else’s experience and assume it will be your own.”

It’s important to remember that each breast cancer is unique, with differing profiles and mutations and diverging clinical paths.

“It’s natural for friends and family members to give well-intentioned advice based on their experience with cancer and treatment,” notes Dr. Ali. “However, patients must keep in mind that not every cancer – and more specifically, not every breast cancer – is the same.”

WHY WE CHOSE OCEANSIDE, CA AS OUR LIFE AND SMALL BUSINESS HQ

https://www.oceansidechamber.com/oceanside-blog/why-we-chose-oceanside-ca-as-our-life-and-small-business-hq

https://www.oceansidechamber.com/oceanside-blog/why-we-chose-oceanside-ca-as-our-life-and-small-business-hq#comments

Community

Location matters. For us, location (where we live and spend our time) is right up there as one of our most important things in life, and I don’t say that lightly. But caution should still be taken.

“With any of these pain relievers, always read the labels and discuss any questions about dosage, safety, or prescription interactions with your doctor,” says David Miller, MD, a family medicine physician at Scripps Clinic Rancho Bernardo.

Contact your physician also if your pain reliever isn’t working for you. Your physician can check for any underlying condition that might be causing your symptoms.

What are OTC pain relievers?
The two main types of OTC pain relievers are acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). They work differently on the body.

Acetaminophen blocks pain messages in the brain. NSAIDs, which include aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen, work by reducing the level of chemicals involved in inflammation.

Acetaminophen
Acetaminophen (Tylenol, Excedrin) is particularly effective for treating headaches and reducing fevers.

“Acetaminophen is often the OTC pain reliever I recommend first for minor ailments,” Dr. Miller says.

“It is very safe when taken appropriately and is less likely to cause stomach irritation than an NSAID. Pregnant women can take it, as well as the very young, including infants and children with fever.”

As with any medication, follow instructions and stay within the daily limit allowed. Be careful not to take too much without knowing it. Acetaminophen can be found in many cough and cold products, including NyQuil and TheraFlu. Taking too much acetaminophen can harm your liver, perhaps permanently.

Aspirin
Aspirin (Bayer, Bufferin, Excedrin) is one of the oldest pain relievers, used to reduce pain, swelling and fever. It should always be taken as directed.

Aspirin is not recommended for everyone. It may cause side effects, including nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and heartburn. Physicians nowadays recommend other more effective pain relievers.

Aspirin should not be given to children and teens as it has been linked to an increased risk of Reye’s syndrome, a rare but serious condition that causes swelling in the liver and brain.

“Adolescents and children should never be given aspirin for flu-like symptoms, chickenpox and other viral illnesses due to the risk of Reye’s syndrome,” says Dr. Miller.

Aspirin has special benefits for people with heart disease. It is widely used to help prevent and manage heart disease and stroke in people with a high risk.

Aspirin thins out platelets, the cells responsible for blood clots, which can contribute to strokes and heart attacks. Clotting can clog the arteries supplying the heart and brain. Other NSAIDs are not recommended for people with heart disease, high blood pressure or other risk factors.

Ibuprofen
Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) may be more effective for some symptoms or conditions, depending on the type of pain.

“I often recommend ibuprofen for menstrual cramps and sore muscles,” explains Dr. Miller.

“Ibuprofen is less of a stomach irritant than aspirin and has less of a blood-thinning effect if you have any conditions where loss of platelets would be a concern,” he says. “However, it’s important to note there have been some concerns that ibuprofen can contribute to kidney damage if not used correctly.”

Naproxen
Naproxen (Aleve) is the most powerful anti-inflammatory pain reliever available without a prescription. It is especially effective for sprains, sunburns and arthritis and other conditions.

Similar doses of Naproxen tend to last longer than other non-prescription pain relievers. They can last eight to 12 hours, compared to four to eight hours. Fewer tablets can be taken during the day.

Naproxen is not recommended for people over 65. Older adults are more likely to have side effects, such as ulcers and bleeding.
